GOIN' TO CANTON
by Mary Hebbel
(Poet and Riding Member)

'Twas the week before competition, and all 'round the arena,
not a horse was bucking, except for Sabrina's.

The Cowgirls were spurin', and riding with care,
with visions of the buckle, when we get there.--

When over at the trailer, we heard such noise,
It was Marty saying, "Hey, grab a flag boys."
And what to our wondering eyes would appear,
The boys were too busy, drinking cold beer.
Gosh, that Marty, she’s helpful indeed.
She’s always there for whatever we need.

The sun was setting, it was gettin' dark,
When we heard the music, and knew it was Mark.
From up in the announcer's box, what a wonderful sight,
Workin' on our music, ‘till he gets it right.
Shania and Trace, and sometimes Willie,
When he’s not here, we miss him really.

Jada had her whistle and Terry with the mic,
we were told, "Learn the drill or take a hike."

More rapid than Mustangs, the girls they came,
While Terry shouted and called us by name.

“Now Wanda and Tammy and Jeannie Piel,
Watch your spacing, and you too, Ceal."

"Look across Vickie, find your partner,
It can’t be too hard, she’s over yonder."

"Good job Lorin, you’re looking so fine.
You and your mom, y’all never do whine."

"Now come on Mary and make ol' Doc go,
Get him out of that trot, you're moving too slow.
Push ‘em up Roma, you're lagging behind,
Listen to me girls, you all need to mind."

With Stephanie and Jada leading the Chevron,
You’d best believe, we all got our groove on.

Sarah and Tex, they make a great pair,
Leading us through like a song and a prayer.

That Jeannie Robertson, you’d swear she had wings,
Cuz without her, we couldn’t do our thing.

"Saddle horn to saddle horn," that’s what he said,
To Brittany and Leslie, 'til his face was all red.

"Look across the arena, and get those lines straight.
Deborah and Smokey, don’t break down your gait."

With a bug to iron out on that Liberty Gate,
"Now come on girls, line up straight."

Nose to flank, and then nose to knee,
"I’m trying to help you, so listen to me."

When Kathleen’s on Whiskey, she uses no spurs.
Ain’t NOBODY got a chance, with legs like hers.

Wanda’s back on Milly. Of course, that ain’t new.
We often tell her, "It’s not always ‘bout you."

The Cowgirls were stressed and Ol’ Wilma was too.
Cause Toni was yelling, “I’m gonna get rid of you!”

This drill team--Jada does make it her life.
Bet Danny is wondering, “Where the heck is my wife.”

With Sixteen riders, you’ll watch our flags fly.
We need a little more practice, only we can see why.

Wearing our colors of red, white, and blue.
Riding our horses, because we love to.

We girls all work hard with blood, sweat, and tears.
But at the end of the day, we have no more fears.

Leaving the arena two abreast.
Now it’s time to give our horses a rest.

"Now, dash away, dash away, and get some sleep y'all,
Cuz we’re going to Canton, and winning it all!"
